In India, she walked in silence from shrine to shrine among the noisy pilgrim throngs, keeping only objects and images in the notebook she left behind on a train leaving Allahabad for Bombay. The notebook eventually fell into the hands of the lawyer, Mir Bahadur Ali. He left an account of finding the notebook which was published in the Bombay Quarterly. A facsimile edition of the notebook, together with Mir Bahadur Ali's account and annotations was published by the Aleph Book Company of New Delhi. Readers will also be aware of the recent republication of the notebook by the Granta publishing house in London, with a foreword by Arundhati Roy.
