Notes, Thoughts, and Observations
Photographs trace the moment of the event and of the impulse of their taking. Beyond ourselves and within ourselves at the same time..
The photograph does not suffice.
Having contemplated the fragmented Ionian statuary collected at the Archaeological Museum of Chios I have decided that I like whatever is damaged by time, including people.
There’s no solution, that much
we knew, there are only fragments.
- From Adam Zagajewski’s poem `Lightning’.
What is photography if we see so little?
In the transition to digital one of the great losses has been the contact sheet. A reason why I still use film is the coherence and trace of the roll of film, as well as the telling juxtapositions between frames that emerge.
We don’t know what music is. Who speaks
in it. To whom it is addressed. Why it is
so obstinately silent. Why it circles and returns
instead of giving a straight answer
as the Gospel demands.
(From Adam Zagajewski’s poem `Late Beethoven’)
`I haven’t yet known a man who loved virtue as strongly as one loves beauty’ - Confucius
Photographs have no meaning except outside themselves in the spaces and exchanges they create. Their role is civic.
Why photograph if not in the name of what is invisible?
