Notes, Thoughts, and Observations
Photographers stop time to animate imagination.
The fragmentation of time into discrete moments. The fragmentation of tradition into images. The fragmentation of the human body into photographs.
I can only understand fragments. I can only leave fragments. I have made and unmake myself of fragments.
Echoing Brecht, in his 2018 film, Le Livre d’Image, Jean-Luc Godard observes that ‘in reality, only the fragment carries the mark of authenticity’.
Sontag was wrong. Photography is not a way of imprisoning reality but of releasing it into the viewer's imagination. It does so by using vision to appeal to what cannot be seen with the eyes.
The first thing one should consider when one embarks on a life in photography is one's own blindness.
Our eyes see things first
So that imagination
Can see with eyes shut
The most important part of photography takes place in the dark.
